NME have been doing a list of the 50 greatest indie songs this week. Oasis is #1 of the list and Nirvana's #2, so of course I agree with that list... There's a lot of brit groups, a lot of things that I use to listen to... Nothing's better than brit groups... I guess if I had to list my 50 favourite indie songs, my choice wouldn't have been very different from this.

I went to a concert last thursday. Good Shoes was playing the first part of The Rakes. The first thing you notice about Good shoes is that they wear ruined Chucks (well, that was easy…). Apparently, that group like good old recipes, can it be old Converses or rock music. According to Les Inrocks, this is a group to watch for. What's my own opinion after that concert ? Well, I can say it's one quite good brit group among so many others interchangeable brit groups, but I cannot say more. The problem with the same old recipes is that they all have the same taste at the end.

Fortunately, their followers were much more appealing. Alan Donohoe is the living proof that you can have no talent in dancing (at all), and yet be the leader of one of the most exiting group of the moment. Again, what makes the difference between one and another British band is the stage performance. I'll always prefer good performers. A rock concert must be a spectacle. And with The Rakes, I was satisfied. Their recordings might not be terrific, but their live concerts are. We’re only at the beginning of the year, but I already think that last week’s concert’s gonna be on my “list of the best concerts I’ve been to in 07”.

A proof that you can be aware of pollution and environment problems without necessary being an old killjoy person... :)

Abigail Percy

Abigail Percy is a jewel designer. I accidentally came across her website and fall in love with her beautiful pieces. Even if she claims to be inspired by Paris, this is mostly Glasgow that I see trough her beautiful pieces. The floral patterns, the simple designs, I think the imperceptible influence of MacKintosh and Art Déco is here. And Glasgow, its architecture, its people, its optimism too.

It is a little bit pricey for me, but I think I could make an exception one day. For a lovely necklace, or wonderful earrings for instance. Her pieces are all hand-made, that's the kind of objects you'll keep for years and you won't regret having buy. That's a timeless jewellery. And it's all so delicate & beautiful ! Subtle, girly but not too much… Very "vintage" inspired, but quite modern in the same time. There's lot of pearls, but not used in a classical way. Pearls paired with leaves and flowers patterns don't seem that old-fashioned. It gives them a twist !

My favourite piece so far is the rhodendron necklace, the one pictured at the extreme right of the header above. The leaves earrings are really stunning too. I wish I had discovered her while I was still in Glasgow !

'Et ce n'est pas Chantal Goya'

I went to a very good concert last wednesday. The first part was featuring Katel. I didn't knew her at all before going, so it was a complete -and wonderful- surprise to discover such a talented artist. I can now say I love Katel ! She was there to present her first album. Her voice is very particular, quite strong. Her texts are like finely carved sculptures that she wrote patiently. She did a cover of Human Behaviour, one of my favourite Björk’s songs. I’m telling you : I love her !
I regret now I didn't purchased her album that evening. Maybe I'll catch her at Le Printemps de Bourges, she's gonna be there too !

The main part of the concert was concerning Jeanne Balibar. She's an actress / singer (tick what you want). I didn't knew her before going neither, so I listened to one of her album during the past week to see what it looks like and I wasn't convinced. To be honest, she's not really my cup of tea. But I had a great time anyway during her concert. She's great on stage, and the people in the public were (older than me) quite enthusiastic. They knew the lyrics by heart, were dancing or sitting in front of the scene, it was cool. I took lots of pictures, therefore I was happy (even if most of them are quite blurry). Good music + possibility to take picture = makes me smile :)

Simply boring

I've just seen Lady Chatterley, the movie by Pascale Ferrand. Gosh, you can't imagine how boring was that film !!!

The scenario is adapted from a version of D.H. Lawrence's book. The story takes place in the UK, in the early 20's. To sum up the scenario : Lady Chatterley has an handicaped husband, they live together in a little castle in the countryside, she's bored and dispressed, and she somehow fall in love with the gamekeeper Parkin. And then for 2 hours the realisator films the two of them flirting, having sex, going on walks, having sex, being angry against each other, having sex, and so on. Oh, I forgot, there is a close shot on each little leave, each flower, each drop of water all along the film, I don't know why, I just think it's just really annoying. This is art, some might say. This is boring, I'll respond.

The most amazing thing about this film is that it gets five Césars (the French Oscars, kind of). Five Césars ! How come ? Apparently I was the only one to be bored, uh ? Among others were the best film's César (?!?) and the best actress' César. Okay, so you should know that to my mind this gal's not able to act, everything seems so "artificial", she's not natural at all, it looks awkward. She's really bad at it. But this is only my opinion, and it looks like I'm the only one to think that way… Gosh, what's wrong with me ???

So, let's say I didn't understand anything AT ALL about this film. Some may judge it as a chef d'œuvre, I think it's a dreadful adaptation of the book, then it's up you to watch it and make your choice ! OR you can avoid the boredom torture and watch Little Miss Sunshine or American Beauty instead and have a good time… It's up to you...

Music is my favourite drug

The most wonderful thing about the internet, when you're as obsessed as me with music, is that you can easily have access to hundreds of GigaOctets of music and discover to a bunch of new artists. I made a list of the websites I use to visit to get my daily fix :

● Pandora : everybody's talking about that website, but I'm not a big fan. I have very ecclectic tastes, and if I listen to something, it doesn't mean I'm going to like every single song similar to it.

● Musicovery : The same concept as Pandora, but cooler. The main difference with Pandora is that you're not obliged to listen to songs from the same genre. You can also choose to listen to songs according to your mood, for instance. Very clever.

● RadioBlog : Who doesn't know RadioBlog ? Enter the name of a song/artist and listen to it immediately ! Millions of songs are available. You can also create your own radio to add to your blog. I've mine, but it really needs an update, and I'm a bit too lazy…

● Myspace : everyone knows this one as well. Myspace is really useful cos everybody has a profile there, it makes it easier to look for an artist, either it is a worldwide famous rock star or a local little group. I have a Myspace profile too, I use it as a catalogue of my favourites groups and artists, such as Mogwai, Beirut or The Fratellis.

● Music mags : NME, Les Inrocks, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone are great to read reviews and stay in the know with the latest news and gossips. I also subscribe to those RSS feeds : PopMatters, Fluctuat, dMute.
And, of course, I read a bunch of music blogs : Open Your Eyes (my fave, he has great taste in music), mp3 hugger (that I will love forever, cos thanks to him I discovered The Rye), One small sound, I guess I'm floating, Je dis ça je dis rien, Music is art (truly beautiful), Reloda (one of the few entirely legal music blogs), Debaser.

● Last.Fm : THE perfect musical website to me. Last.Fm combines the concepts of Myspace (you can create your own page, invite friends and take part in communities and forums), Pandora (you can discover to new artists), Wikipedia (the members edit the information about the artists by themselves) and RadioBlog (you can listen to songs and even download some of them for free). Last.Fm is really an wonderful website. What I prefer about this website is the community spirit. Members can get involve. So, if you're a last.fm user, check out my profile and get in touch !

My brand-new music obsession : Costello Music, The Fratellis' debut album. The fact that they're Glaswegians is not the only reason why I like this group. Actually, their disc somehow reminds me of Definitely Maybe, the first album of Oasis (and that is definitely a compliment to me). Because this is the kind of album one can listen to again and again. Because their rock'n'roll is stained with a lighter pop sound. Because of their catchy melodies. ~~Because John Lawler is cute~~. Because each and every song of the album could be a hit. Because those guys have a sense of humour. Because of the three pin-ups who are portrayed on the disc sleeve. Because even if they're not brothers, like Liam and Noel are, they choose a confusing pseudonym for their group. Is it enough reasons to convince you to listen to The Fratellis ?

'C'est parce que j'ai mis des talons'

This week-end, I've seen La Môme. It's a French movie by Olivier Dahan that retraces Edith Piaf's life, a French singer. That's the kind of movie I'm supposed to love : a true story, a historical background, a bit of drama... Well, I didn't liked it, for one simple reason : I didn't understand anything ! The truth is, I didn't knew much about Piaf's life before going. I never saw her singing on TV, unlike my father. She's an artist from one or two generations ago. And the scenario is like a puzzle : it is all muddle up ! It starts when she’s a child, then goes when she’s old, then back to her childhood, then when she’s a woman, then back to her teen years, and so on… So half of the time, I was like : hum, who’s that character ? Is that the same I saw on the previous sequence but older ? Or someone else ? Hence I didn’t enjoy the film quite much. Too much concentration needed.

However, some good points that make the film worth seeing :
● Marion Cotillard, the actress who plays Edith Piaf, is remarkable ! She really incarnates the singer admirably ! Bravo Marion ! (Even if she had way too much make-up on her face to my mind !)
● One other good side of the movie is the setting : a view of popular Paris during the 2nd WW and the fifties.
● And of course, the music ! Marion is always singing in play-back. So basically the whole soundtrack is sung by Edith herself. It was nice to hear all those old songs once again.

By the way, I've got a funny anecdote about Edith Piaf. Last year my Taiwanese flatmate would ask me to listen to French music. So I gave him CDs of all the groups I used to listen to (Telephone, Indochine, Noir Désir, Louise Attaque, that kind of things - that is to say French rock). He told me it was not his kind of music. So I presented him some "variété française" artists, you know, such as J.J. Goldmann, Patrick Bruel and so on… They're all sooooo popular in France. He wasn't very happy with it. Then we accidentally came across a song from Edith Piaf. He loved it ! He said it looks like very typical and old French music (and it obviously is !). So I downloaded all the songs from Edith Piaf I could find for him, and that's how a new fan of this old singer was born :))) Maybe I'll make new fans today, who knows ? The cutest website ever

I'd like to share something today : one of the most delightful website I know. It's called Orisinal and you can find there plenty of little games. Each game features lovely characters and comes with a light ambiance music. The design is sooo beautiful ! Those are really the cutest games ever ! My favorite one is "bugs". I can spent hours jumping on bubbles to make the ladybugs fly off... So check it out, I'm sure you're gonna love it !

GénériQ is a music festival that is sometimes said to be the "Eurockéennes matching festival for winter". From february 16th to 27th, eclectic concerts take place in Dijon, Belfort, Besançon and Mulhouse. I’ve been to one of those this week-end. It was featuring Jack Penate, Babet and Chikinki. I had a good time. And for once, it was allowed to take pictures of the artists. Unfortunately I didn't have anymore batteries in my camera. I was so upset I didn't check the batteries before going, but usually it is forbidden to take pictures there ! Anyway, it was a good concert, in a little place, and the spectators weren't too numerous, so I think it was just fine. I like big rooms fulled with hysteric fanatics, but something a more intimate ambiance is good too.

First of all, Jack Penate. The new “web phenomen” according to those who are a little bit too eager about myspace. Hum, to tell the truth, I wasn’t convinced by his show. Okay, the guy can move his legs, but that’s not enough for me. I don’t go to a concert to watch a crazy stooge, but to listen to good live music. And that’s maybe what was missing with Jack’s music : songs with a true melody and a strong beat, you know, songs able to make people dance and enjoy themselves. They were only three on scene : a bass, a battery and him and his guitar. Clearly that wasn’t enough to produce decent music. Try again, Jack.

The delightful find of the evening was the lovely Babet. She’s not a complete stranger, she used to be a part of Dionysos, one of the most successful rock bands of the time in France. She is walking on her way alone, now. Her debut album is to be released at the beginning of march 2007. It was her second concert in solo. And that was really great. This tiny woman (she must be 1,50 m height, ok, perhaps 1,60 m) has much more charisma than Jack Penate. With her violin, her guitar and her two mates, she entertains the whole audience. She’s the kind of artist it is worth seeing on stage. Not to mention to her music : wonderful folk-rock songs that talk about love, travels and life. With the imaginary and marvellous atmosphere I already loved in Dionysos music. She creates her own fantastic world : a blend of poetry and exuberance, associated to rock’n’roll. And a bit of disco, too !

And last but not least, the worthy successors of The Libertines : Chikinki. One of them, actually. English rock bands are not a disappearing species, as everybody knows. So this time, they come from Bristol, they’re English and foolish, they have a punk-rock style. They rock, babe ! Even with one member of the group missing, they were great and everybody had a lot of fun during their show. They might not overtake Franz Ferdinand, but they’re talented enough to provide enjoyment to their spectators. Why asking more?

London, The Good, The Bad, The Queen and me

According to this test, I belong in London. Because London is diverse and international enough to satisfy many of my tastes (yeah, I've nothing better to do than checking on stupid - yet funny - websites of that kind). Well, we have a bit of time ahead us before I'll move to London, I tell you.
Anyway, for those of us who don't have the chance to live in the UK, here is a little something to cheer you up : twelve songs about this grey and beautiful city that is the capital of England. How comes ? The Good, The Bad & The Queen is a kind of concept album, supposed to be "a postcard from London" (as Damon Albarn, the leader of the group, said in NME) . The group is composed by Tony Allen, Paul Simonon (Clash), Simon Tong (The Verve) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). They're not really the worst musicians I know... Their new project is already a hit : the album have been certified gold in the UK. I didn't have the disc in my hands, but I overheard a couple of songs here and there, and I can tell you I'm very enthusiastic about what I listened to so far. I can't wait to listen to the whole thing !

'He was a friend of mine'

Some critics presented Brokeback Mountain as "a gay western". Well, I’m afraid this film is not a western. Brokeback Mountain is a love story. There are scenic landscapes, boots and jeans trousers, a bit of rodeo… the whole package for a good western movie, that’s true. But, the western bit is just a background to this beautiful film. What Ang Lee portrays here is a love story. A love story between two guys, right, but a love story all the same.

Some critics said that Heath Ledger was overplaying, and that his fake accent was ridiculous. That’s what I read somewhere. Once again, I don't agree with that point of view. I think this actor is outstanding in that role. He plays a rough guy, although his performance is all in restraint. The same cannot be said about Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s a good actor, for sure, but I wasn’t as mesmerized by his part as I was by Heath Ledger.

Until last year, some people though the novel by Annie Proulx (published in the New Yorker in 1999) was impossible to adapt for the cinema. Ang Lee made them wrong. He provides us a stunning movie. He develops the psychology of the two main characters over 20 years, he makes them grow, he films them clogging into the society’s outlaws. He captures the consequences of an impossible love with talent.

'Te necesito, mamá'

Red. This is the first thing you notice : the bright colour of the film's poster, and the flowery patterns that surround Penélope Cruz's face. And her eyes. Yes, her eyes : all smoky, deep and expressive… At some extend, it sums up quite rightly the film's atmosphere. A feminine fable, full of passionate characters, that Pedro Almodóvar films in the orange-coloured ambiance of south Spain.

I didn't like that film so much, due to two main reasons : first of all, I think I've seen too many good films in a short lapse of time. This is not to the advantage of Volver. Then, the pseudo-fantastic thing does not work with me. But I agree it gives the movie an off-time atmosphere, where gossips and superstitions are in the middle of the scene. I know it's supposed to be part of the charm of the film, but this is simply not credible to me. It's "too much". That's only my opinion, though. Volver remains however a very good film. The actresses, each and every one of them, are wonderful. I totally agree with the Cannes' decision to award them as a group.

This movies raises the themes of mother-daughter relationships, of coming-backs and forgiveness. It also deals with the idea that sometimes you just reproduce your parents' actions, you know, unconsciously. The example of Raimunda, the character played by Penélope Cruz, and Yohana Cobo, her daughter in the film, is flagrant and overwhelming to me. They don't exactly live the same story, but there is a kind of calamity about men on them. Most generally, men have a bad image, when they're not simply absent, in the film. This is all about women, brave and strong women. Women with a "red" temper.

Shrigley's absurd drawings

The first time I noticed his work, it was last year, on the walls of Glasgow. David Shrigley is the artist who designed the posters for the Triptych Festival. At this time I took pictures of those posters, thinking "wow, how cool is that!", but I had no idea who this artist was. Then I did a little bit of research, as curious as I am, and I found informations about him on the web and in The List, a Scotland-based magazine. And finally, last week, I remembered those posters again when I read his interview in one of my favourite music magazine : Les Inrocks (Fr).

David Shrigley graduated from Glasgow School of Art. Well known as a cartoonist for The Guardian, he also makes sculptures, paintings and animations. He has directed the video for Blur's Good Song. His drawings are both humorous and bizarre and his artworks are very simply designed. He confesses himself in Les Inrocks that it took him about 5 minutes to conceive the London Tube Map.

'You need to wake-up, now'

Last week, I went to the projection of An Inconvenient truth, the film directed by Davis Guggenheim and starring Al Gore. It was followed by a debate with a scientist and a politician. The first part of the evening, the projection of the documentary, was brilliant. The debate was really less interesting.

Inviting a scientist was a great idea, but I would have invited someone else than this political guy. Maybe no one else agreed to come… So. This man just monopolized the micro. He was talking all the time and boring everyone with loads of numbers and statistics. And promoting his own political party, of course. At one point, I really had the impression to be at a political meeting, and I didn't come to this event for that purpose, really not. The scientist guy was much more intersting, however he couldn't say one little word. Actually, even then he managed to tell a couple of silliness. *Sigh*

The best one is really Al Gore. His speech was clear and not soporific at all. He demonstrates what the global warming is, and why we should worry about it, giving the most obvious evidence : the ten hottest ten years on record have occurred in the last 14 years. It is not over-dramatic though. Al Gore adds his views on what can be done and gives you tips to be a carbon-free citizen.
I think this is a necessary film, and I strongly avise you to go to watch him, if it's not done already !

5 randoms things about me

I took that questionnaire at Candy Cane's, but I think half of the blogosphere already answered to it. So, here is 5 things you don't know yet about me :

● I got my driving license only 5 days after my 18th birthday (the legal age to drive in France). I don't know anybody who did better than me. I'm very proud of this.

● When I was a child, I used to have a salamander as a pet. I kept it on an aquarium. There is people out there who never saw a salamander in their life ! I also used to adopt dogs, cats, rabbits, goldfishes, poneys, miniature hens, a one-leg dove... Growing up in the middle of the countryside is fun, I tell you !

● When I passed the bac (equivalent to the A-level in the UK), I told my parents I failed. Well… that day, I realised my parents don't have any sense of humour.

● The first CD I bought with my own money was Louise Attaque, back in college. It still is one of my favourites albums nowadays.

● I loooove to take pictures. More than a hobby, it's a sickness, a drug, whatever… I'm a camera junkie ! But, wait a minute… that's something you already know about me, don't you ? :]

The very best of 2006 (to me)

In one of Dijon's movie theaters, people have been invited to vote for their favourite movie in 2006, and that is Volver that reach the top rank. The list also includes Little Miss Sunshine, among others. I don't really agree for Volver. Anyway, it seems we're in the middle of the awards time : the Oscar nominations have been published lately. So I decided to publish my own best-of-2006 list. Here it is :

● Little Miss Sunshine
● Love + Hate
● Babel
● C.R.A.Z.Y.
● Brokeback Mountain
● Red Road

I'm waiting for the Oscar results, I hope that Little Miss Sunshine will get at least one or two of the gold statues. I'd give the best supporting actress award to Abigail Breslin (for her role in Little Miss Sunshine) and the best screenplay award to Babel. And to my mind the best documentary is An inconvenient truth, without any doubt.

And, what about Volver ? I've seen it last week, thanks to the Telerama festival, and it is a very good film, but I was a little bit disappointed. I think I'll write a post about it, and about the others films I've seen during this festival (Brokeback Mountain and C.R.A.Z.Y.). Stay tuned !

Time for changes

First of all, I changed my layout a little bit. Hope you like it. For those who are nostalgic, the picture above is the one I used for my last banner : a lovely butterfly on a lavender flower that I pictured last summer in my garden...

And, as you can see, I finally decided to write my blog in english. Don't know if it'll last, but I think it might be a good idea to keep practising my english, while talking about stuff that I like... once in a while (yes I'm very bad at updating).
I don't have many (if any) readers anyway, so it would probably bother anyone. Just one thing though : some people think that, since I've been living in Scotland, I must speak flawless english. That is really far from right. I do speak (and write) a correct english I suppose, but I still do a lot of mistakes and misunderstandings ! And I have a terrible lack of vocabulary. So if you notice mistakes, please don't boo me, and tell me instead, so I can improve myself ! And don't expect me to be a dictionnary !

2 ~ Kate Dickie, qui joue Jackie dans le film, est époustouflante dans ce rôle
3 ~ Le "renversement" à la fin du film est ébouriffant, mais le suspense reste intact jusqu'au dernier moment
4 ~ C'est un film très marquant
5 ~ Ce film a obtenu le prix du jury 2006 à Cannes

Synopsis :
Jackie travaille comme opératrice pour une société de vidéosurveillance. Sans relâche, elle observe une petite partie du monde et protège ainsi les gens qui vivent sous ses yeux. Un jour, un homme apparaît sur son écran de contrôle, un homme qu’elle ne pensait jamais revoir, un homme qu'elle ne voulait plus jamais revoir. Désormais, elle n'a pas le choix, elle doit lui faire face.

J'ai beaucoup aimé ce thriller, très dur et très marquant. Tout d'abord j'ai retrouvé l'ambiance de Glasgow : la nuit orange, les mouettes, le vent, les détritus dans les rues... Oui, Glasgow ressemble à ça, mais Glasgow ce n'est pas QUE ça, hein. Si je devais faire un reproche à ce film c'est celui de continuer à stigmatiser Glasgow comme une ville dangereuse et misérable, alors que c'est aussi une ville très vivante et chaleureuse. Même s'il y a encore de graves problèmes sociaux dans la plus grande ville d'Ecosse, Glasgow est passée du statut de ville industrielle en déclin à celui de capitale culturelle dynamique, résolument tournée vers l'avenir. D'ailleurs les tours de Red Road sont sur le point d'être démolies !
Je pense que Red Road a le mérite de faire réfléchir sur les thèmes du deuil, de la vengeance et du pardon, mais aussi sur la question du voyeurisme et du contrôle des citoyens britanniques. Andrea Arnold, la réalisatrice, mène son sujet avec brio et sans tomber dans les stéréotypes. Le plus dangereux personnage n'est pas celui qu'on croit !

Red Road est le premier film d'une trilogie un peu particulière. Il a été produit dans le cadre du nouveau concept de Lars Von Trier : "Advance Party". Trois réalisateurs ont été choisis pour ce concept, ils doivent écrire chacun un snénario en se basant sur les mêmes personnages à chaque fois, et les trois films doivent se dérouler en Ecosse. J'ai hâte de voir les deux autres films !

Vous ne savez pas quoi faire ce week-end ? Pourquoi ne pas aller visiter le Musée des Arts Décoratifs, qui a (ré)ouvert ses portes hier après dix ans de travaux... Je suis allée le visiter ce matin. Du Moyen-Age aux années 2000, des centaines d'objets du quotidien sont présentés, des objets utilitaires et esthétiques, et d'une qualité toujours extraordinaire. Le parcours est à la fois chronologique et thématique. On passe d'une salle à l'autre, des arts du Moyen-Age aux créations modernes en passant par les oeuvres d'Art Nouveau, du bois au plastique, en passant par le bronze ou la marqueterie, en n'oubliant pas un petit détour par la salle des jouets... On admire des oeuvres d'une extraordinaire délicatesse. On s'étonne devant des objets déconcertants, comme des chaises aux formes improbables...
Bref, on ne s'ennuie pas une seconde ! En plus l'entrée du musée est gratuite jusqu'à demain, à l'occasion des Journées du Patrimoine, ainsi que l'entrée du Musée de la pub et de l'exposition Balenciaga.

Il était une fois une punaise qui vivait dans un pissenlit.

Ce pissenlit tout blanc, tout rond, tout doux, était une cachette idéale.

A l'intérieur, Madame la Punaise se trouvait à l'abri des prédateurs. Elle ne sortait que très rarement de sa cachette, tellement elle s'y trouvait bien.

Malheureusement pour elle, les graines de pissenlit furent bientôt dispersées une par une par le vent... laissant la punaise sans toit...

Bienvenue à tous !

Après quelques mois d'absence sur la blogosphère, je suis revenue, et j'ai décidé de déménager mon blog ici, je commencais à manquer d'air chez Over-blog. Ce déménagement est peut-être provisoire, dans l'idéal j'aimerais avoir une interface Wordpress ou Dotclear, mais je n'arrive pas à les installer chez moi... Tant pis, j'ai modifié un peu la présentation du blog à ma façon, et peut-être que je vais rester ici finalement, car Blogger offre beaucoup de possibilités.

Je pense qu'au début je vais surtout poster des photos, et dès que j'aurais plus de temps je recommencerai à rédiger des articles plus longs. La plupart de mes photos sont généralement diponibles en plus grand et en meilleure qualité sur mon compte Flickr. Si vous avez des critiques ou des suggestions, n'hésitez pas à m'en faire part dans les commentaires. :-)
